Rio 2016 organizers have confirmed that a controlled explosion was carried out at the basketball venue before Spain and Nigeria tipped off Thursday. A statement from a spokesman said a backpack was found in a trash container in a bathroom and blown up at the direction of Federal Police and the Army. “Inside the bag were found a tablet, a pair of socks and a jacket,” the statement read. The game began with no fans in the arena, but they were allowed in when the scene was deemed safe. Rio Olympics 2016: Olympic diving pool that turned green closed on Friday

British diver Tom Daley has put the mystery surrounding the green water at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre back in the spotlight after revealing the venue was closed on Friday. It has been one of the strangest stories of Rio 2016, with divers forced to compete in a pool that more closely resembled a pond. The International Swimming Federation said a chemical imbalance caused the issue that also affected the water polo arena. A spokesman for FINA insisted that the green water didn’t put the athletes at risk, but the decision to close the pool today could reignite concerns. Among those already concerned was Daley when he found the Aquatics Center shut.

Joseph Schooling qualifies for historic Olympic final

Joseph Schooling became the first ever Singaporean male swimmer to make an Olympic Games final on Friday morning (Singapore time) when he qualified in the 100-metre butterfly. The 21-year-old made history by clocking a new Asian record of 50.83 seconds to finish first out of 16 competitors at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The final will take place at 9.12am on Saturday morning, Aug 13. Schooling won his semi-final ahead of Chad Le Clos to progress as the fastest qualifier, putting in a strong final lap after coming in second at the turn. Team-mate Quah Zheng Wen clocked 52.26s to finish last in his semi-final amidst a strong field, which was won by Hungarian Laszlo Czeh. Michael Phelps came in second.
